The Ultimate Offline Crypto Storage Solution Is Here (The Shieldfolio Stonebook!)
It’s never fun to lose your password. But losing the private keys for your crypto wallet can quickly turn disastrous as it means money can’t be accessed.
Many crypto users learned this lesson the hard way towards the end of 2017 — right when Bitcoin surged past $19,000.
Arizona State Professor Alexander Halavais joked he was ignoring the news about Bitcoin as he’d forgotten the password to a wallet holding $70 dollars worth of the crypto purchased several years ago.
One Reddit user told Slate he bought 40 Bitcoins in 2013, but could not remember the password in December 2017. Another poster offered a $20,000 reward to anyone who could recover Bitcoin on an inaccessible wallet.

One holder, Philip Neumeier, considered hypnosis to recover a long-forgotten password to an account with nearly $300,000 in Bitcoin at the time.
Instead, Neumeier built a supercomputer that sat in a 270-gallon water tank to disperse heat. Despite the five-foot-tall setup, Neumeier estimated it might take a couple hundred years to run through all the possible password combinations.
Long Past Bitcoin’s Boom, Lost Passwords Still Haunt Crypto Holders
Even though Bitcoin’s price remains far below its late 2017 high, forgetting crypto passwords is still a big issue.
During the annual Defcon security hacking conference in August 2020, reverse engineer Michael Stay shared a story of recovering several hundred thousand dollars worth of Bitcoin from an encrypted zip file.
Stay explained an anonymous Russian investor reached out for help in 2019 after forgetting the password to the zip file. The investor bought about $10,000 in Bitcoin back in 2016 and placed the private keys in the inaccessible encrypted file.
The investor said he’d read an old paper Stay published explaining how to break into encrypted zip files and was curious to see if Stay’s techniques could work. Despite huge odds and a complicated process, Stay and his business partner were able to decrypt the file for less than $10,000 in a couple of weeks.
Big & Small Accounts Alike Aren’t Immune From Password Issues
Big entities in the crypto world, and even those who loathe Bitcoin, aren’t immune from password troubles.
In November 2019, local media in Zimbabwe reported on the Golix cryptocurrency exchange and the “password fiasco” from its CEO.
Tawanda Kembo allegedly lost access to one of the exchange’s Bitcoin wallets in May 2018. In a statement, Kembo denied allegations his exchange was insolvent and could not process withdrawals, but did admit he lost the password to a wallet containing 33 Bitcoins.
In early 2020, commentator Peter Schiff, a noted Bitcoin critic, complained on Twitter his crypto wallet “got corrupted somehow” and his password was no longer valid.
When other users chimed in and told Schiff he just forgot his password — Schiff doubled down and wrote “I used a very simple numeric password that I have used many times in the past.”
A couple of days later, Schiff admitted he mistook his wallet’s pin for the password. He also admitted he neglected to write down his seed phrase, leading to a fiasco that was an “honest but costly mistake!”
